Is it safe to receive chiropractic care after whiplash?

Is it safe to receive chiropractic care after whiplash?

Chiropractic care is a widely used treatment in the recovery of whiplash and associated disorders.
Most professional experts believe active spinal mobilization techniques post whiplash are essential
in improving the symptoms associated with whiplash.

Lets start with, "what is whiplash and whiplash associated disorders." The term whiplash refers to rapid post traumatic cervical acceleration/deceleration syndrome which is typically associated with car accidents. This occurs when the cervical spine is forced into a hyper flexive and hyper extensive state, taking the spinal stabilization structures beyond their capacity of handling strong forces and compounding loads. Rupture of the ligaments, overstretching of the ligaments, and damage to the intravertebral discs would subsequently occur resulting in early or even late neck symptoms.

These whiplash symptoms include:
  • neck pain
  • shoulder pain
  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • jaw pain
  • numbness and tingling
  • arm pain
  • restriction in ROM
Most symptoms are debilitating to a persons work requirements, home activities, exercise routines, and sleeping patterns. Lifestyle changes, whether temporary or permanent may be recommended. The initiation of treatment early is significant for the outcomes of improvement and become highly recommended avoid complete disability. Chiropractic care is one such method that has been shown to be highly regarded as one of the most proven and effective techniques. A chiropractor's main job is to first do no harm. Thus, a thorough musculoskeletal and neurological examination is performed in order to determine the extent of the damage and advise in the necessary steps in the recovery process of whiplash. Chiropractic care is an inexpensive drug free and surgical free approach to recovery and is considered the "first line" of defense. Chiropractic care varies in style, mostly practitioner dependent, and can provide gentle care to improve a pain free approach to an increase in ROM.
